Britney Jean Spears was born in
rural Louisiana (Kentwood) on December 2, 1981, to Jamie and Lynne
Spears. As a child, Britney attended dance classes, and she was
great at gymnastics, winning many competitions and the like. But,
most of all, Britney loved to sing.
At age 8, Britney tried out for "MMC"
(1989), but was turned down due to her young age. This directed her
to an off-Broadway show, "Ruthless", for a 2-year run as the title
character. At age 11, she again tried for "MMC" (1989) and this time
made it as a mouseketeer along side many stars of today (Justin
Timberlake and J.C. Chasez of N*Sync and Ryan Gosling).
Her big break, however, came when she was signed as a Jive Recording
Artist in the late 90s. With the release of her debut album,
"...Baby One More Time" in early 1999, Britney became an
international success, selling 13 million copies of "Baby" and 9
million (as of July 2001) of her sophomore album, "Oops!...I Did It
Again," released in May of 2000.
Britney ended 1999 selling over 10 million copies of her debut and
as the Billboard Top Female Pop Artist (singles and albums), Top New
Pop Artist, Top Billboard 200 album Artist and Top 100 singles
Artist - female. The American Awards, MTV and Teen Choice awards
soon began rolling in and in early 2000 Britney was nominated for
two Grammy awards.
Britney Spears had a much publicized affair with 'N Sync singer
Justin Timberlake. Throughout the affair Britney kept on insisting
that she was a Catholic girl who would not have sex before marriage.
After their break-up four years later and Justin's interviews in
which he stated that he and Britney did have sex, Britney finally
admitted that she did in fact sleep with Justin. Britney Spears has
collaborated with some of the biggest names in the business. She
co-hosted the American Music Awards with L.L. Cool J; performed at
the Rock in Rio festival. Spears performed with Aerosmith, 'N Sync,
Nelly, and Mary J. Blige at the Super Bowl.
Britney Spears became a brand ambassador for Pepsi in 2001. She also
co-authored another book with her mother called A Mother's Gift. She
even entered the restaurant industry with her own establishment,
Nyla but it was a commercial failure and has shut down. Spears'
ambitions of becoming a movie star took a jolt when her vehicle
"Crossroads" bombed badly. She was awarded with the Razzie Awards
for Worst Actress.
Spears luck with the Grammy awards has not been very good. In 2000,
Spears was nominated for two Grammy awards; Best Female Pop Vocal
Performance for the single "...Baby One More Time", and Best New
Artist. She did not receive either award. She was again nominated
twice in 2003 but lost out on both occasions. She finally struck
gold with "Toxic" in the category of Best Dance Recording.
Spears hits the headlines consistently, whether she is releasing
videos or not. Britney shocked audiences in a remixed rendition of
Madonna's "Like A Virgin" and "Hollywood." Britney kissed Madonna
onstage in a performance that also included her arch rival Christina
Aguilera. Britney Spears released her first fragrance, "Curious." It
is a floral scent with vanilla and musk. The fragrance had the
biggest debut in sales in history of Elizabeth Arden. "Curious" was
honored by the Fragrance Foundation, naming it Best Women's
Fragrance. Her net worth is estimated at more than U.S. $ 150
million.
Britney's penchant for the bizarre took a new twist when she married
childhood friend Jason Alexander in an impromptu ceremony in the
Little White Wedding Chapel on the Las Vegas Strip on 3rd January
2004. The couple agreed to an annulment later the same day. On 18
September 2004, Britney Spears legally married Kevin Federline, a
professional dancer.
Spears' first hits collection, Greatest Hits: My Prerogative, was
released in late 2004. The album debuted at number four on the U.S.
charts (due to minimum promotion), selling over 255,000 copies in
its first week of release.
Spears announced her pregnancy via her official website in April
2005.On September 14, 2005, 6lb. 11oz. baby boy Sean Preston
Federline was born in the Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center in Santa
Monica, California, by an elective caesarean section.
She is currently recording her fifth studio album, which is supposed
to be released sometime in 2006. In May 2006 she announced her
second pregnancy with a surprise appearance on the The Late Show
with David Letterman.
